General information
Netanya
Netanya is a city in the center of Israel and is the capital of the Sharon Plain. Its 14km of beaches have made the town a very popular tourist resort. Starting at Liberty Square there are steps that lead you down to the beach.Netanya was founded in 1929 by citrus farmers, but now is primarily a center for tourism and the diamond trade. Israel is one of the world’s largest exporters of diamonds, and Netanya is home to many diamond cutters and polishers who came to Israel primarily from Belgium before and during World War 2.

Some of the main Sites to Visit:

The Well House at Netanya Heritage Center
- commemorates the work and contribution of the early settlers of the colony, focusing on the years 1928-48.
Besides viewing the exhibits on related subjects, visitors can see a film devoted to the clandestine immigration of Jews to the Land of Israel in the British Mandate period, and the beginning of citrus growing in the land. A theater group of volunteers presents living pictures from the past. The first floor is devoted to a well that is still functioning, and the beginning of the colony of Netanya. The second floor is used as a lecture hall and for temporary exhibitions.

The Poleg Nature Reserve - is 8km (13 miles) south of Netanya, and offers
an interesting hike along the Poleg River, upstream from the point where it meets the sea. The riverbanks are lined with giant eucalyptus trees, planted almost a century ago to help drain the swamps that had developed throughout the plain of Sharon (eucalyptus seedlings were imported from Australia by early Jewish settlers, who valued their ability to withstand drought). In winter and early spring, the wildflowers along the route have made the Poleg Reserve a favorite destination for botanists. The river water itself is absolutely off-limits.

The Iris Nature Reserve - at the southern edge of Netanya, is a sanctuary for wild and cultivated irises. There is an adjacent pond that attracts seaside birds and waterfowl. In February and March, the Reserve is carpeted with wild, dark blue irises -- pathways let you immerse yourself in this paradise that few travelers know about. There is a parking lot on Ben Gurion Boulevard and you are asked to stay on the pathways. No admission fee.

The Liberty Square
(Kikar Haatzmauth) - in the heart of Netanya, is a place where families come at weekends. In the summer there are many performances from artists. The Beach is just 2 minutes away and the best restaurants and shops in the city surround the square itself.

Tayelet Shaked - is one of Netanya’s promenades. It was built in the late sixties. A lot of families sit and picnic on the grass areas. There are also kiosks and restaurants along the promenade. There is an amphitheater, which in the summer months puts on shows. It has an amazing view of the sea.

Krause Street - is built in a small promenade style. It’s a paved area with statues and benches. There is a beautiful statue of The Fiddler from Fiddler on the Roof and there are many boutiques and cafes along the street.
Hertzel Pedestrian Mall - is always full of people. There are a lot of restaurants, shops musicians and street vendors, and is a great place to sit and relax over coffee.

The Statue of the Hawk
- is in the Hamatzok promenade. It is situated in the middle of small gardens and if you face the statue it will look like it is flying towards you.
